Surrey Now's Help in Getting the Word Out

The Surrey Now has written a lot about the challenges that stay at home dads face.

They had a front page article on the topic.
They had a follow up article on the topic.
Plus they had four letters to the editor on the topic.

It is great the word is getting out.

Surprise Phone Call

I got a phone message from Cindi. She is a grandmother in the Surrey area. Her son-in-law is a home giver because her daughter works.

She invited me to call her for ideas of fun stuff to do with my son.

She had some great ideas.

Thank you Cindi.

Daddy Discrimination Shaking Things Up in Daddy World

As the first line of the blog says:

"This article is getting a lot of attention in the daddy world, and even among moms."

It has. I am amazed at how much attention this issue has received over the Internet. It is great to see the discussion on stay-at-home-dads and the challenges they face.

Fathers Are Parenting Allies

This is the follow up article from yesterdays post.

It is from About.com . I was amazed to see they had a Stay-at-Home Dad section.

Fathers should be seen as Parenting Allies, not Threats
Friday October 17, 2008

Here is an update of the Surrey Now story that prompted yesterday’s posting regarding the British Columbia dad who wasn’t allowed to join a moms’ group with a key reason being a concern for the “security of our children.” It is reassuring that most of the response came from women, and most of that was in favor of the dad, Rick Kaselj. A poll on the paper’s home page has more than 90% of respondents supporting the stay-at-home dad.

Stay-at-Home Dad a Security Threat?

Here is another blog post from around the world.

The Stay-at-Home Dad: A Good Play Date or Security Threat?
Thursday October 16, 2008

Personally, I get a little sick of it, writing about bad things people have said about or done to the stay-at-home dad. But here is a whopper out of Canada that cannot be ignored.

Dad Rick Kaselj was excluded from a moms' group. On the surface, that’s no big deal. It is a moms' group after all, and he is not a mom. But the scary thing is they used the security of their kids as a reason. Security of their kids? What's he going to do in the presence of a bunch of moms and his own kid? How ignorant can a group, especially a group of fellow parents, be? He is a parent just like them, caring for his child just like they are caring for their children. How does that pose a security threat? He just wants to meet new people and offer an outlet for his son. You almost have to be twisted to come up with an ulterior motive from that.

Great Facebook E-mail

A Surrey resident found me on Facbook and sent me this e-mail:

D sent you a message.

Hi there. I saw you and your beautiful boy Cole on the front of the Now paper. That's too bad about the group. Not sure what part of Cloverdale you live in but we have a new park in my area. Hope to bump into you guys there. We have a 19 month old girl who loves to make new friends :)

Cheers and all the best to you and your family. D.

Amazing E-mails

This situations has shown me how many amazing and supportive people are out there.

I just got this amazing e-mail:

From: Stacey

Sent: October 22, 2008 7:26 AM
Subject: Message of support for Rick

Hi Rick, My husband mentioned your situation to me today. He's a stay at home dad to our two sons (and has been for over two years), and he also maintains a blog about the whole process
(
www.dadinreallife.com). When I read all the details, I was thoroughly shocked, and I hope that things with the new group are going well. Just wanted to let you know that there are moms out there who value the important work you're doing as a male primary caregiver - you're teaching your Son that men can be caring and compassionate, and that's an important lesson in today's world. Thanks,Stacey

I Don't Get the Newspaper

I don't get the Surrey Now.

I had read it on-line.

Today I got to read the letters to the editor that appeared in the October 17, 2008.

WoW!

The article sparked emotion in Surrey Now readers.

What I took from letters to the editor:
- Some people defined their actions
- Some people highlighted the challenges that dads face
- Some people just didn't care

Dad's exclusion in club is not even newsworthy
